Vinegar and Its Many Uses

Frugal Dad recently published a good article on the many uses of vinegar.

I've found vinegar to be very helpful around the house - cleaning, as an air-freshener, in laundry, etc. It's kind of a miracle liquid, and I'm sad that most people don't know about its many uses since it's much better for the environment than most household cleaners. Some people have a problem with the smell, but if you add a little bit of essential oil (whatever scent you love - I suggest lemon or citrus) to the solution, it'll cover the vinegar smell.

Click HERE to read the article. You can also do an online search to find even more ways to use vinegar or my other favorite cleaners - baking soda and Borox.

Electronic Coupons - How and Why

Click HERE for a good overview of what electronic coupons (e-coupons) are and how they can be used. I recently used them on my Kroger card. The best part is that you can stack the e-coupons on top of any other manufacturer's coupon.

Here's a scenario:
Buy 4 pk Cottonelle at Kroger for $.99
Use a $1.00 off coupon from the Sunday paper
Scan Kroger card, get $.50 off from Shortcuts.com
$.50 off from Cellfire.com

You actually MAKE $1.01 on the purchase! Pretty cool!
Thank you, Being Frugal is Fabulous and 5dollardinners!

A Few Changes

Well...I've decided I need to spice things up a bit on this blog! I'm going to be changing things around, and looking into finding a reason to keep this blog going.

I recently got out of the military and am now working on finishing a degree that I should have completed nearly seven years ago - has it really been that long?!

I've been toying with the idea of making money on the web just to keep myself A) from going crazy and B) so I'm bringing in a few dollars. I'm at home most of the time anyway, so this gives me an occasional break and it can assist with my creativity, something I feel I've lost along the way.

So...I need to think of a few topics to blog about. I also have considered an Amazon or Ebay shop, but that will take some more time.

First step - get some subscribers!

Great Calphalon Deals at Amazon.com

Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 12-Inch Everyday Pan with Lid $19.99 down from $168.00

Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 2-1/2-Quart Shallow Saucepan with Lid $24.99 down from $119.00

Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 10-Inch International Griddle/Crepe Pan $27.99 down from $85.00

Also, Amazon is offering a one-year subscription to Bon Appétit with your purchase of $50 or more in their Home & Garden Store. Usually, if you don't wish to receive the magazine you can opt for a refund instead!

Recipe Matcher Website

I found an interesting site for recipes, RecipeMatcher.com.
You can enter what you have in your pantry and refrigerator, and the site will find recipes that match the ingredients you already have or have most of the ingredients for. This is great if you need to save extra money or are leaving on a long trip!

Rite Aid WOW!!!!

So...Rite Aid hasn't been that exciting lately, but next week is GRRRREAT!!!! Click HERE to see a list of all the FREE after rebate items, thanks to Coupon Cravings.

I can vouch for the list because I already have a copy of the sales flyer. I yelped and scared my husband, I was so shocked and excited. There are many opportunities for donations if you don't need all of the items.

I will post any deals and/or scenarios that correspond with the list o'freebies as soon as I find some. Enjoy!

Fun post from Wallet Pop!

Here is a funny article from Wallet Pop, a site that I found through Amazon.com.

Save on embalming: Eat more Micky D's!

I also found a great deal on Kitchen Aid's Artisan Stand Mixer at Amazon....$249, plus free shipping!! Locally, the stores are charging $299. Grab 'em while they are HOT!

Free Rice Link

You might notice that I added a link to the right, called Free Rice. This is a link to a site that allows you to improve your vocabulary (not just in English) AND feed the hungry. For each answer you get right, the site will donate 20 grains of rice. That doesn't sound like a lot, but trust me, it's addicting! The total donations listed on the site are 45,782,034,850 since 2007.

I would also like to point out this video telling a bit about Free Rice and showing the rice getting delivered to Bangladesh with help from the United Nations World Food Program.

PaperBackSwap.com Feedback

Well, I posted two books a few days ago, and I've already had people request them! Wow! That was very quick. I'm planning on mailing them tomorrow, so I printed out the shipping information. The most I paid for shipping a hardback was $2.76 (media mail). I need to find more books to list!

Remember, the more books you mail out, the more you can request. This is fun!

Save Yourself Account - Suze Orman

In April, I opted to open a money market account through TD AMERITRADE.

I had visited Suze Orman's website, and she offered a deal where you deposit $50 a month for a year, and you will receive $100. I thought, hey - FREE money!

You can find more information at the following website: www.saveyourself.com

Not only will your cash deposits be FDIC-insured, you can also take advantage of the $100 bonus from TD AMERITRADE. You can also set up direct deposit to the account, so you will never forget!
Cool!

PaperBackSwap.com

This website allows you to post books that you would like to "swap" with other club members (not just with one person).
The cost of the swap? About $3 for postage.
They also have Swap sites for CDs and DVDs. I recently signed up for the site, and posted 2 books (we got rid of a bunch of books before the big move - argh!). But, there are several books I saw that I would like to swap for. If the book you want is not available, you can still put it on a wish list, so if it does get posted, you will be notified. Pretty cool!

Neat article about couponing

Click here to read an article from the Chicago Tribune about extreme couponing. This could become a new sport in the Olympics!

The best I've done so far is to save 30% off my grocery bill. But, B & I don't like to eat a lot of the foods that you usually see coupons for. We like organic and natural foods. Those coupons are much harder to find. However, I do a great job at the drug stores with the help of all my online couponing blogs that I use to find all the deals. I usually walk out of the drug store without spending a dime, or with very little OOP (out of pocket). : )

Thanks, Jessa, for the article!

My Rite Aid FREEBIES!

This is a photo of all the freebies that I got at Rite Aid this week! Not bad, eh? I could have gotten a few more items, but I don't use disposable razors or regular light bulbs. I realize that Indiana doesn't have Rite Aid, or at least not where I'm from. But, sometimes Walgreen's has a great rebate program, too. In fact, I'll take a photo of the last Walgreen's shopping trip I took and post it later.

The two One Touch monitors you can see in the back were free because I had two "up to $20 off" coupons from the Sunday paper. The monitors sold for $19.99. I will donate them to a local healthcare assistance center.

I also plan on donating the Nature's Cure acne solution and Charles Worthington shampoo (for color-treated hair) to a local homeless shelter.

The remainder of the items, B & I can use at home. Let me know if you have any fun shopping moments! My next few posts I plan on answering some questions about coupon websites, and whether I think it's less expensive to use coupons or buy the store's generic products. You may be surprised! : )

The Melting Pot is good for birthdays AND anniversaries...

What do YOU want to see?

Dear Friends and Family,

What types of things would you like to see on this blog?
Do you want rebates?
Freebies?
Specific stores?
Online deals?
Nothing?

I am doing this blog with you in mind.
CVS, Target, and Wal-Mart are three of the stores I will begin listing since they are also located in the Midwest. You can get lots of great deals at Wal-Mart.
Please let me know if there is anything that you need. Also, I will begin posting some tips about couponing and store policies, etc. These things will all come into play.

I NEVER pay full price for anything if I can help it.

I will NEVER PAY for these items again: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo & conditioner, most hair products, many medicines

Did you know?

You can "stack" MFQs (manufacturer's coupons) at some stores with their store coupons to get extra savings?

Some stores that allow this: Walgreen's, Rite Aid, CVS, Target, and Food Lion

Unless things have recently changed (I'll check on this): CVS allows you to use a MFQ, plus A CVS coupon, PLUS a discount coupon off the entire purchase (i.e. Save $3 off any $15 purchase)

Click here to see a deal at Walgreens from Sisterly Savings. It's a little bit complicated, especially if you have never shopped at Walgreen's or aren't used to using coupons frequently. But, if you want free diapers, try it out!

A few things

First - if you haven't seen the movie "Lars and the Real Girl", you should consider renting it! Very good, funny, and touching.

Second, since my Walgreen's decided NOT to put their July Easy Saver Rebate booklets out (grrr...), I wasn't able to get the great deals I had hoped for...

I still got the Maalox for less than $1, and ended up buying two Revlon eyeshadow compacts (4 colors each, reg. $6.50) for $2.50 with the BOGO (Buy 1, get 1 Free) sale, and 2 $2 off coupons. Not too shabby. I figured I could use them for the wedding.

I'm feeling a little bit better, but I think it's mainly due to the medicine I took earlier. B & I went for a walk on the beach. The sunset was really pretty, and there were a few people out fishing and wading in the bay. During our stroll, we decided that if we buy a house, we are also getting a cat. We both miss having a cat around.

(Sorry, Cayla. I won't be replacing you, it's just that I miss your company! You keep Mom happy now, you little vole and chipmunk killer. I've heard you like to bite the head off the chipmunks...you didn't learn that from me.)

I'm off to work on wedding stuff, and get prepared for the gig tomorrow. Franklin, VA - here we come!

Boycott ExxonMobil

I have actually been doing this for a few years now.
It's pretty simple - go next door to BP.
I'll even pay a few more cents for Shell.
You are driving on the highway, and you need to stop for gas.
You see a sign that only has Exxon listed, drive on a few more miles to the next exit.
I'm sure other oil companies have done things that should cause us to boycott them as well, but Exxon has screwed over their own countrymen for 15 years now...

Please read this great article written by my college buddy, Ashley Shelby, about the recent (and infuriating) Exxon-Valdez ruling in the Supreme Court.
Today I am sick.

One side of my nose is completely stuffed with some really nice drainage. I can't stand for very long before I get light-headed. And my throat is sore.

I've already had a glass of OJ, and have begun drinking my triple echinacea tea, AND I took Sudafed. We have a gig tomorrow afternoon in Franklin, VA, so I'm hoping I'll be feeling better...

I'm in bed now doing some coupon research - trying to plan my drugstore runs (assuming I feel better this afternoon).

Here are a few deals that are only good for today (see definitions below):

WALGREENS

Maalox Chewables $3.99
-use June IVC $2
-use July IVC $2
-MFQ $1.50
Total $-1.50 overage

Benefiber $6.79
-June IVC $3
-July IVC $2
-MFQ $2.00
Total $-.21 overage

For the July FAR items click here and visit the Centsible Shopper blog.

RITE AID
Crest Pro Health Toothpaste Night $2.99 FAR

Definitions
IVC = Walgreen's Easy Saver Catalog Coupons (Instant Value Coupon) found in front of store.
The catalog lists all of the rebates. I recommend grabbing two. One as a tracker, one to cut the coupons from.
MFQ = Manufacturer's Coupon
FAR = Free After Rebate (Rite Aid has a catalog at the front of their stores, too. Sometimes they will also have coupon booklets such as the recent "Beauty the Rite Way")

Ace Rebates

Here is a link to some Ace hardware rebates compiled by Hooray for Free-bates! June 27-29 is the store's National Grand Opening Sale, and it sounds like there will be some great deals.

Marsh Deals 6/26 to 7/2

To all my pals in Indiana, here is a link to a blog, Bargain Bri, that has the current Marsh deals. Note that under most items, she mentions a coupon to use. That's the best part about these blogs! It makes it easier for the rest of us. Since she's local to you, you might want to check back each week and/or subscribe to her blog to keep up on the deals.

In the Beginning

I have decided to begin a blog for three reasons.

1) I have found so many great deals online, I want to share them in an easy format with my family and friends.

2) As an outlet for my life right now. Work, wedding planning, college classes.

3) To prove that I have the most wonderful fiance in the world!

I can't promise that I will be updating every day, but I'll attempt to keep you in the loop for those deals. : )
